Why the New Balance 2002R is the Best Walking Sneaker for Wide Feet

Posted on March 1, 2025March 1, 2025 by Claire

I used to swear by Skechers. For years I could buy a pair in my actual shoe size and be assured that they’d fit perfectly, last for ages, and provide a comfortable ride. But, and I’m not sure why, the last couple of pairs I bought didn’t live up to their usual standard.

In the search for a new brand, I was gifted a pair of New Balance 2002R, and now I’m going to tell you why these are the best sneakers I’ve ever owned.

The New Balance 2002R is a Game-Changer for Plus-Size People with Wide Feet

As a plus-size person with wide feet, I need shoes that are supportive and comfortable, yet still stylish. For this reason, the New Balance 2002R has quickly become my go-to sneaker for everyday wear, travel, and walks.

But why?

The shoe features a suede and mesh upper, which not only makes them breathable but also gives them a bit of stretch, making them a great choice for wider feet. The padded collar and tongue add extra comfort, ensuring that they don’t dig into your ankles – a problem I’ve encountered with many other sneakers.

If you’re carrying extra weight, shock absorption is crucial. The New Balance 2002R features ABZORB midsole cushioning, which helps absorb impact and reduce strain on your joints. It also has an N-ERGY shock-absorbing outsole, which provides excellent energy return.

These technologies help relieve pressure on your knees and ankles. Whether you’re walking through an airport, sightseeing in a new city, or just running errands, you’ll appreciate the cushioning and relief these sneakers provide.

Note: size up a whole size to get the right fit. I’m normally a UK size 7, but I wear a UK size 8 in the 2002R, and they fit perfectly – comfortably snug around the heel and mid-foot, with a roomy toebox.

New Balance 2002 ‘Dusk Blue’ (M2002RSD)

The ‘Dusk Blue’ were my first pair, and I wore them to literal death. They took me around Japan for two weeks, and traveled to Slovenia, Scotland, Croatia, France and Estonia with no issues. I wore them to work every single day, and traipsed them through mud and puddles and snow.

They hung on admirably, and even now, while they’re falling apart around my feet, I use them for outdoor chores. I can’t bear to part with them!

Why NB2002R are great for travel

Comfortable shoes can make or break a trip. But with the NB2002R, there’s no break-in period! From the very first wear, they are amazingly comfortable. The construction is lightweight, but supportive, so they’re suitable for all-day wear. Plus, the breathability via the mesh upper keep your feet cool and fresh.

They’re even versatile enough to pair with almost any casual outfit, from jeans to joggers to dresses, so you don’t have to pack multiple pairs of shoes. That leaves extra space in your luggage for souvenirs!

Cons

The only con I’ve found with the model is that while the mesh upper helps its breathability, it means they’re not great for cold or wet weather. They’ll need to be sprayed with a waterproofing spray for protection if you plan to walk in the rain.

Suede is also annoying to maintain, and water can stain it. But a suede brush can get rid of most dirt, and you can scrub the other material with a mild detergent mixed with water, then leave to air dry. Never put them in the washing machine!

New Balance 2002R ‘Black Magnet’ (M2002RBL)

My new pair, the ‘Black Magnet’, are available for £130 at New Balance right now!

In summary, the New Balance 2002R is hands-down one of the best sneakers I’ve ever worn as a plus-size person with wide feet. The combination of ABZORB cushioning, N-ERGY shock absorption, and a breathable yet durable design makes them perfect for daily wear. While they’re not waterproof, they’re easy to clean and hold up well over time. If you’re looking for a stylish, comfortable sneaker that actually supports plus-size bodies, I can’t recommend these enough.
